What is our corrosion protection process?
A few grains of grit can ruin your equipment, so our Century team knows what to protect from blasting grit and paint as well as how to protect it. Before anything else begins, Century taping crews apply multiple layers of heavy-duty rubberized tape to exposed threads; we tape and plug all ports and orifices; we remove delicate control instruments; and we seal and tape all hydraulic lines. We stress thorough pre-coating preparation more than most coating applicators because to us it's the basis for the quality that follows.
- Grit blasting: In many cases, recurring corrosion attacks can be traced to poor quality grit blasting. Century Corrosion Technologies, Inc. blasters know their work. They blast every piece of equipment to your specifications with the care that marks a Century job. In most cases, customers specify a "white metal" blast, but commercial grade grit blasting is available. After blasting, the work is checked to be sure that the proper "anchor pattern" was achieved so the primers will adhere to the metal. Then the work gets a final inspection by the blaster, the project supervisor and finally, the painter.
- Cleaning: Before moving on to the coating station, every piece of equipment passes through a cleaning operation to remove duct and grit particles. We use either a vacuum or clean, filtered air to remove any particles which might keep the primer from adhering to the surface properly.
- Coating: Within an hour of grit blasting and cleaning, the coating operation begins. This time limit is set by Century so that atmospheric moisture contamination of the metal will be held to minimum. The coating phase of the Century protection process is carried out with all the care and precision of the previous steps. The project supervisor studies the customer's specifications for the system of primers and coatings to be used; then the materials are assembled and the coating begins. To be sure the coatings measure up to thickness specifications, every coat is checked in both wet and dry states. The supervisor uses the highly accurate micro-test method to ensure Century quality from primer to finish coat.
- Touch-up: Large assemblies, such as blowout preventor stacks or production trees, undergo customer reassembly after the final coatings have been applied. Since some damage usually occurs to the finish during reassembly, most customers will call for a touch-up coating operation. In order to restore the damaged areas to the same protective level as the rest of the coating, these places are fully grit blasted, cleaned and recoated with the full system of coatings. The protection is now 100% intact and ready for shipment.
- Final Preparation: At this point, most coating companies are finished. But Century is different. We are concerned with protection, so we perform one more operation, free of charge. Once the coatings have dried, we remove the heavy-duty tape from those areas which need protection from the blasting grit, coat them with anti-corrosion grease, then cover with customer furnished hard-surface protectors.
